Cloud (SaaS) ERP Vs On Premise ERP

On-premise ERP software is still needed, often by companies operating in the defence or security industries where fully or partially closed offline systems are a condition attached to securing crucial business contracts. However due to trends, that have only accelerated in recent years, it is now proving to be challenging to find Customisable Off The Shelf (COTS) on-premise ERP systems that also fulfil your business and operational requirements.

For most businesses a Software as a Service deployment and delivery model for ERP is desirable, because there is still the ability for businesses to customise their own tenancy,  while the vendor takes care of the overall system architecture, security and update management. However if you need a modern, integrated, ERP system and need that system to be fully or partially closed to the internet then there are still options available to you.

The Difference Between SaaS Cloud and On-Premise ERP Systems

SaaS (Software as a Service) ERP systems are systems that you are usually subscribed to, such as MYOB Acumatica or NetSuite ERP, in exchange the software vendor manages the upkeep of your software. That upkeep includes ensuring performance, security and that your software is ready to take advantage of new technologies, automation opportunities and is able to be integrated with other web based applications, such as your company website, a POS system or something else like an RFID scanner. The vendor typically deploys these updates to a schedule.

With an on-premise ERP system the customer assumes control and responsibility for applying system updates to the ERP system. The vendor will make system updates available to licensed users, but it is up to the license holder to deploy those updates. The software license holder is also responsible for maintaining system security – typically through the timely application of vendor security patches – and is also responsible for the delivery of computing power or system performance to end users.
